Pentagon, VA Release Mobile App for Service Members With PTSD

The departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs have released a mobile application to provide support for service members and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, Healthcare IT News reports.

The no-cost app -- called Prolonged Exposure Coach, or PE Coach -- was designed by psychologists at DOD's National Center for Telehealth and Technology and VA's National Center for PTSD.

PE therapy aims to help individuals process traumatic memories and reduce the stress or avoidance associated with such memories. DOD and VA designed the PE Coach app to help individuals continue their PE therapy between clinical sessions.

The app allows patients to:

  • Record therapy sessions for playback between appointments;
  • Obtain an explanation of PTSD, PE therapy and therapy assignments; and
  • Take notes about frequently avoided locations, situations and events for later discussion with a therapist.
  • The app is available for iOS and Android mobile devices (McCann, Healthcare IT News, 7/31).
